The revelation of Surah Abasa is tied to a profound incident that carries significant lessons in humility, equality, and prioritization in conveying the message of Islam. During the early days of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) mission in Makkah, he was deeply engaged in a discussion with some prominent leaders of the Quraysh. These leaders held considerable influence in the society and were seen as key figures who, if they embraced Islam, could have potentially led many others to follow. The Prophet (PBUH), with his unwavering dedication to spreading the message of Allah, was intent on convincing them of the truth of Islam.
At that moment, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, a blind man and a sincere believer, approached the Prophet (PBUH). Driven by his thirst for knowledge and guidance, Abdullah sought to ask questions and gain further understanding of Islam. However, the Prophet (PBUH), engrossed in his dialogue with the Quraysh leaders, momentarily frowned and turned his attention away from Abdullah, perceiving the interruption as untimely. His reaction, though subtle and human, was not in keeping with the ideal standard of prioritizing those who genuinely seek guidance, regardless of their social status or the situation at hand.
In response to this incident, Allah revealed the verses of Surah Abasa, gently correcting the Prophet (PBUH) and highlighting a critical principle in the mission of Islam. The initial verses of the Surah recount the incident without naming the Prophet (PBUH) explicitly, emphasizing the universality of the lesson. Allah reminds His Messenger that the true value of a person lies not in their societal position or influence but in their sincerity, humility, and willingness to accept the truth. The verses underscore that the blind man’s desire for knowledge and faith was far more valuable in the eyes of Allah than the indifference of the Quraysh leaders, who were preoccupied with their pride and arrogance.
This incident and its divine response serve as a timeless reminder for all Muslims, especially those in positions of leadership or responsibility, about the importance of treating everyone equally and prioritizing sincerity over superficial attributes. It illustrates the essence of the Islamic message—that spiritual worth transcends physical abilities, social status, or material wealth. By choosing to honor Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum through this revelation, Allah sets a clear example that humility, inclusivity, and a focus on genuine seekers of truth are central to the faith.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as the epitome of humility and obedience, accepted this correction with grace and incorporated its lessons into his actions. It is narrated that after this incident, he held Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum in high regard, often addressing him affectionately and entrusting him with significant responsibilities, such as appointing him as a deputy leader in Madinah during the Prophet's absences. This demonstrated the Prophet’s deep understanding and implementation of the guidance revealed in Surah Abasa.
Through this event, Surah Abasa teaches humanity that the true measure of a person lies in their piety, sincerity, and actions, and it encourages us to uphold the principles of equality, compassion, and humility in all our dealings.
